If you prefer a cleaner surface but still want movement and volume, this kind of design can make more sense than adding decorative surface work. The trade-off is different rather than better: the outer shape becomes more dominant, so the layer underneath needs to sit comfortably beneath the wider body and sleeves.
Hazal example 3: Turkish viscose jacquard — interest woven into the textile
The Turkish Silky Viscose Jacquard Open Abaya offers a third route. Its current specification confirms 100% viscose with a woven jacquard surface, relaxed open fit, relaxed wide sleeves and an ankle-length finish.
Jacquard should not be described as hand embellishment: the interest comes from the woven textile structure. That lets the garment have visible texture while keeping the surface treatment conceptually different from Malaika's handwork.

Which one is easier to layer?
Do not answer this from decoration alone. Layering depends on sleeve volume, body volume, closure, fabric behaviour and the base garment.
- Malaika: the hidden-button front gives verified open-or-closed styling flexibility. If worn open, keep the visible base relatively simple when you want the handwork to remain the focal point.
- Matte Hawa: the butterfly cut provides substantial outer volume. A streamlined base usually avoids competing sleeve bulk.

Does embellishment automatically make an abaya formal?

The actual level of formality depends on the amount and placement of detail, fabric surface, colour, silhouette, accessories, footwear, event and local expectations.
