Read the fibre label without letting it make the whole decision
Quick answer: viscose and polyamide are different fibre families, but neither one tells you exactly how a finished dress or abaya will drape, stretch, breathe, feel or layer. Fibre chemistry matters; so do yarn, knit or weave, fabric weight, porosity, finishing, lining, opacity and garment cut. The useful question is not “Which fibre is always better?” but “What does this specific fabric need to do in this specific garment?”
Viscose and polyamide describe fibres—not finished performance
Viscose is a regenerated-cellulosic fibre made by converting cellulose into a spinnable fibre. Polyamide is a family of synthetic fibres; nylon is one familiar type of polyamide. Those chemical differences influence how the fibres interact with moisture and heat, but the consumer wears a fabric and a garment—not an isolated fibre.
Textile principle
Research on regenerated-cellulose and knitted textiles shows that thermal and moisture-related behaviour changes with yarn structure, thickness, porosity and fabric construction. That is why two garments with the same headline fibre can behave differently, and why a fibre label should not be turned into an unmeasured claim such as “always cooler,” “always more breathable” or “always more durable.”
What the label can tell you
Fibre family
You can identify whether the garment uses regenerated cellulose, synthetic polyamide, an elastic fibre such as spandex, or a blend.
Blend percentage
A verified percentage tells you how much of each declared fibre is present. It does not tell you the exact stretch, airflow or thermal resistance.
What it cannot replace
You still need construction, weight, opacity, lining, fit and garment measurements to understand how the finished piece is intended to behave.
Where product-specific evidence wins
When a brand can tell you the fibre, construction and silhouette together, the label becomes much more useful than a generic “best fabric” ranking.
Hazal example 1: 100% viscose in a woven jacquard open abaya
The Turkish Silky Viscose Jacquard Open Abaya is verified as 100% viscose, but that is only the first layer of the specification. Those construction details explain much more about the intended look than “viscose” alone.

Matte Hawa uses 100% Silky Mechanical Polyamide in a fully opaque butterfly open abaya. Here, the wide cut is a major part of the wearing experience. Comparing Matte Hawa with the Turkish viscose jacquard therefore is not a clean laboratory comparison of “polyamide versus viscose”; the fabrics and silhouettes are different at the same time.

Why construction can matter more than the headline fibre
Sienna provides a useful contrast. Its 92% viscose / 8% spandex composition is made into a midweight jersey knit. The Turkish abaya also relies heavily on viscose, but it is a woven jacquard. The resulting garments have different structures before we even consider silhouette.
So if you are comparing two modest garments, ask whether you are comparing the same kind of fabric. “Viscose versus polyamide” is more useful when construction, weight and garment type are also reasonably similar.
A better five-question shopping method
- What is the verified fibre composition? If the percentage is unknown, do not invent it.
- Is the fabric knitted or woven? Jersey, jacquard and other constructions change behaviour.
- Is the garment opaque, lined or unlined? Coverage can change the number of layers you need.
- What is the silhouette? A fitted maxi dress and a butterfly abaya use fabric very differently.
- What job does the garment need to do? Everyday base, outer layer, work dress and occasion piece have different priorities.
